Mac Whitney, born 1936 in Kansas, has lived and worked in Texas for the past 50 years. 

In 1979, Mac Whitney was awarded a commission by the City of Houston to build a large-scale sculpture, one of the firsts, funded by grants by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Department of Urban Development. This sculpture, titled ‘Houston’, is placed in Stude Park in the Heights Neighborhood and serves as a landmark sculpture to the community at large. 

Whitney’s work has been shown continuously over his lifetime pursuit of a career in the arts, both nationally and internationally, and is part of many public collections including the Dallas Museum of Art, The Fort Worth Museum of Art, The Art Museum of South Texas, The University of North Texas Museum, and The Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas.

Whitney’s dynamic sculptures and extensive career have become a recognized part of Texas’ rich cultural environment. His abstracted raw steel sculptures portray the primary forces of tension and resolution while instilling a sense of monumentality. The freestanding sculptures are both prodigious and lyrical- heavy metal seems effortlessly bent, unfolding toward the sky.  

Mac Whitney’s work is profound. Having worked in isolation for many years, Whitney has produced countless series of work: The Underslung, the T-Angle, the Kinetic, and the Linked Series, all have been exhibited across Texas and internationally. His work is important to the contemporary art scene and thrives in a public setting.
